In France, there is a legal minimum wage, regardless of the work performed. Employers cannot pay their employees less than this wage. This is the SMIC: the Minimum Interprofessional Growth Wage.
The SMIC is set at €10. 85 gross per hour. On the basis of 35 hours, this is equivalent to €1,645 per month.
In France, 13% of employees are paid the minimum wage.
The trade and hotel and restaurant sectors employ the most minimum wage workers.

The majority of the 21 EU countries have a minimum wage set by law at national level. The minimum wage is not the same for all European citizens. There is sometimes a significant difference between states. For instance, in Bulgaria, the minimum monthly income is 332 euros. While in Luxembourg it is 2,256 euros.
